MasterCraft ProStar 197 Boats for Sale
The MasterCraft ProStar 197 is a tournament-class direct-drive inboard built for precise handling, consistent wakes, and world-class ski performance. Designed to meet the demands of competitive slalom, trick, and jump skiers, the ProStar 197 combines MasterCraft’s proven engineering with refined comfort and craftsmanship. With its smooth-running hull, predictable pull, and balanced handling, the ProStar 197 remains one of the most respected ski boats ever produced.
The MasterCraft ProStar 197 was introduced for the 2001 model year as a replacement for the ProStar 195. It represented the next generation of tournament-level ski boats, incorporating a new hull design that set performance benchmarks in slalom skiing while improving comfort and functionality for both drivers and passengers. Measuring 19 feet 8 inches in length with a beam of 91 inches, the ProStar 197 offered slightly more space and improved tracking compared to its predecessor.
The 197’s hull was engineered specifically for smooth, symmetrical wakes and low spray at slalom speeds. Its running surface was tuned through input from professional skiers and tournament drivers to deliver the most consistent pull possible. At 34 to 36 miles per hour, the ProStar 197 produces an exceptionally soft wake, making it ideal for competitive slalom and trick skiing. Its balanced design and tracking fins keep it stable even with heavy loads or tight turns, ensuring a predictable feel for drivers and skiers alike.
Power for the ProStar 197 came from Indmar and later Ilmor inboard engines, typically ranging from 310 to 350 horsepower depending on model year and engine package. These engines provided crisp throttle response, reliable torque, and smooth acceleration. The drivetrain and shaft alignment were precision-calibrated at the factory to minimize vibration and maintain true tracking through the course.
The interior of the ProStar 197 combined performance-focused ergonomics with premium materials. The boat seated up to seven passengers, with a roomy observer’s seat and a simple, functional layout designed for ski course use. Features such as a tournament pylon, optional Zero Off speed control, and precise instrumentation made it easy to set up and maintain consistent runs. The helm offered excellent visibility, and the compact design made trailering and storage convenient for private owners and ski clubs alike.
In competition, the ProStar 197 quickly established itself as one of the most successful ski boats of the early 2000s. It was chosen as the official towboat for numerous national and world-level water ski events and was widely praised for its tracking, wake shape, and driver control.
The ProStar 197 remained in production through the late 2000s before being succeeded by the ProStar 214 and, later, the reengineered ProStar introduced in 2014. Even today, the 197 remains a highly sought-after model for skiers who value its precision, build quality, and timeless performance.
