MasterCraft X5
The MasterCraft X5 is a compact, performance-focused wake and ski boat built for riders who want versatile tow-sport performance in a small, efficient package. Based on the proven ProStar 195 hull, the X5 delivers crisp handling, soft wakes for skiing, and clean, ramp-style wakes for wakeboarding when weighted. As one of the original crossover models in the X-Series, the X5 combines classic MasterCraft precision with the flexibility to handle multiple water sports in one well-balanced boat.
The MasterCraft X5 was introduced in the late 1990s as one of the earliest models in the company’s X-Series lineup, which brought dedicated wakeboarding and crossover designs to market. Built on the same hull as the ProStar 195, the X5 measured 19 feet 8 inches in length with a beam of 91 inches. This hull was already known for its tournament-level slalom performance, and when paired with added ballast and a factory tower, it became a capable wakeboard and all-sport boat.
The direct-drive configuration placed the engine near the center of the boat, giving the X5 exceptional balance and handling. At ski speeds, it produced small, soft wakes ideal for slalom skiing. When weighted with the optional factory ballast or external ballast bags, the hull generated clean, well-shaped wakes for wakeboarding and recreational jumping. This versatility made the X5 a strong choice for families and crossover enthusiasts.
Power came from Indmar inboard engines, typically the 310-horsepower EFI V8 or optional higher-output configurations. These engines were known for their smooth acceleration, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Combined with MasterCraft’s precision driveline and efficient hull design, the X5 delivered consistent towing performance and tight, responsive steering.
Inside, the X5 featured a compact yet practical layout that seated up to seven passengers. The interior included a driver’s bucket seat, an observer’s bench, and a full rear seat, all built with MasterCraft’s signature high-quality materials and craftsmanship. Storage was provided beneath the rear bench and in small compartments along the sides, with enough space for gear and essentials for a day on the water.
The factory tower and ballast system set the X5 apart from traditional ski boats of its time. The tower provided board storage and tow points for wakeboarding, while the ballast allowed riders to tune the wake shape to their liking. Though modest by modern standards, these features made the X5 a true crossover boat capable of delivering both flat ski wakes and shaped boarding wakes from the same platform.
The X5 was produced through the early 2000s before being replaced by larger, more wake-specific models like the X7 and X9. Despite this, the X5 remains an important part of MasterCraft’s history as one of the boats that helped introduce the X-Series and define the all-sport category.
Today, the X5 continues to appeal to those who appreciate smaller, efficient inboards with classic MasterCraft build quality. Its simple, low-maintenance design and versatile performance make it a popular choice for owners who enjoy both skiing and wakeboarding without needing a full-size V-drive boat.
