The MasterCraft X80 was the ultimate expression of size, luxury, and performance in the company’s X-Series lineup. As the largest model MasterCraft ever built, the X80 combined yacht-like comfort with true inboard towboat handling. The MasterCraft X80 was introduced in the mid 2000s as the flagship of the X-Series and quickly gained attention as the largest inboard towboat available at the time. Measuring approximately twenty-eight feet in length with a wide beam and deep hull, it was built for big lakes, coastal waters, and owners who wanted the space and amenities of a luxury cruiser with the performance of a MasterCraft wake boat.
The X80’s design emphasized both comfort and capability. Its twin inboard engines delivered the power needed to move such a large hull efficiently while producing a strong and consistent wake. Many models were equipped with twin Ilmor or Indmar engines producing a combined output of more than 700 horsepower, providing excellent acceleration even with a full crew and ballast. The hull was designed with a pronounced V-shape that cut smoothly through rough water, making it one of the best-performing large inboards for coastal and open-water use.
Inside, the X80 featured premium appointments throughout. The layout included wraparound cockpit seating, a spacious bow area, a large transom sun lounge, and high-end finishes. Many configurations included a wet bar, sink, freshwater shower, and enclosed head compartment, turning the X80 into a true day cruiser. Storage space was abundant, and the large swim platform made it ideal for watersports and entertaining.
Performance remained a defining quality of the X80 despite its size. The boat was capable of generating a clean and powerful wake for wakeboarding, and with proper ballast setup it could produce a long, surfable wave for wakesurfing. The twin-engine configuration also provided superior control and maneuverability, especially when docking or operating in tight areas.
Production of the X80 continued for several years before the model was eventually replaced by more modern large-platform designs such as the X26. Even so, the X80 continues to hold a special place among enthusiasts and collectors. Its combination of luxury, capacity, and power made it a standout in the industry, and it remains one of the few towboats that truly bridges the gap between performance wake boat and sport cruiser.
