The MB Sports B52 23 series was introduced in the early 2000s as the larger sibling to the original B52 21. Built by MB Sports in Merced, California, the 23-foot version quickly became one of the most recognized boats in the MB lineup. The longer hull provided more interior space, additional ballast capacity, and a smoother ride in rougher water while maintaining the same hand-built quality and craftsmanship the brand is known for. From its earliest years, the B52 23 was designed exclusively as a V-drive boat, reflecting MB’s focus on the wakeboard market and the growing demand for roomy, social layouts.
Early versions of the B52 23 featured MB’s signature deep-V hull that delivered large, rampy wakes ideal for wakeboarding. Like the smaller B52 21, it used MB’s gravity-fed ballast system, which allowed water to fill and drain without pumps. This system was simple, reliable, and effective, giving the boat consistent wake performance without unnecessary complexity. Over time, MB refined the ballast capacity and layout to improve wave shaping, eventually adding plug and play ballast options to support modern surf setups. These updates helped the boat evolve from a pure wakeboard model into a balanced wake and surf platform.
Powering the B52 23 has always been a range of reliable V8 engines from Indmar and PCM, depending on the model year. Most boats were equipped with small block engines in the 5.7 or 6.0 liter range, offering strong torque and reliable towing performance. Later models returned to Indmar power as MB continued to modernize its drivetrain and surf technology. Despite updates over the years, MB Sports has maintained a consistent design philosophy focused on simplicity, strength, and hand-built quality.
In more recent years, MB renamed this model the B52 23 Classic, continuing its legacy with updated styling, improved materials, and larger ballast systems while keeping the traditional MB look and feel. The Classic maintains the same core hull characteristics that have defined the B52 23 for over two decades. It is now recognized as one of the most balanced 23-foot inboards on the market, offering big surf waves, reliable performance, and timeless craftsmanship.
