The Moomba Kanga was produced during the late 1990s and early 2000s, serving as one of the company’s most affordable and versatile inboard models. Built by Skier’s Choice in Maryville, Tennessee, the Kanga represented Moomba’s early mission to provide tournament-level performance at a value-oriented price. It was a compact, direct-drive boat designed primarily for water skiing and recreational wakeboarding, offering simple operation and dependable performance for families and enthusiasts alike.
Measuring around 19 feet in length, the Kanga was slightly smaller than other Moomba models such as the Outback and Kamberra. Its shorter hull and direct-drive configuration gave it precise handling and a light, nimble feel on the water. The boat’s design focused on producing small, soft wakes at skiing speeds while still being able to deliver moderate wakeboard wakes when weighted. This made it an excellent crossover option for owners who enjoyed multiple tow sports without needing a large V-drive layout.
Power came from Indmar inboard engines, typically 5.0 or 5.7 liter small-block V8s known for their durability and smooth power delivery. These engines provided strong acceleration, efficient fuel use, and simple maintenance — key traits that helped make the Kanga a reliable entry-level performance boat. The drivetrain layout also contributed to excellent balance, helping the Kanga track straight and maintain consistent pull for slalom skiing.
Inside, the Kanga’s layout was minimal but practical, with bench seating and straightforward instrumentation. It was built for function rather than luxury, reflecting Moomba’s focus on delivering quality craftsmanship at an approachable price point. The interior materials and hardware were durable and easy to maintain, making the boat well suited for frequent use.
The Kanga helped pave the way for future Moomba models by introducing many boaters to inboard ownership. Its compact size made it easy to store, tow, and launch, while its simple mechanical systems kept ownership costs low.
