The Supra Sunsport is one of Supra’s most iconic and versatile inboard boats, known for combining tournament-level performance with family-friendly comfort. Designed for skiing, wakeboarding, and cruising, the Sunsport offered a spacious interior, strong inboard power, and a smooth, predictable ride. Its reputation for reliability, build quality, and balanced wakes has made it a classic choice among water sports enthusiasts and families who appreciate timeless design and performance.

The Supra Sunsport was introduced in the mid-1980s by Skier’s Choice in Maryville, Tennessee, as a larger, more versatile companion to the Supra Comp TS6M. It was one of the first inboard boats to successfully combine tournament-level performance with an open-bow design, offering more passenger space and comfort without sacrificing ski quality.

The early Sunsport measured roughly 20 feet 6 inches in length with an 8-foot beam, featuring a deep hull that provided a soft, stable ride and clean wakes. This hull design gave the Sunsport its reputation for versatility—it could produce small, soft wakes at ski speeds and larger, well-shaped wakes for wakeboarding as the sport emerged in the early 1990s.

Power came from reliable inboard engines such as the PCM 351 Ford and later Indmar powerplants, generally producing between 240 and 300 horsepower. The Sunsport’s direct-drive layout balanced weight distribution and made it a strong performer for slalom skiing while maintaining enough interior room for passengers and gear.

Through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Supra Sunsport received several updates to its interior design, materials, and gelcoat patterns. Supra continued to refine construction methods, using hand-laid fiberglass and high-quality upholstery that helped these boats age exceptionally well. The combination of practicality, comfort, and performance made the Sunsport a foundation for future Supra models.

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, Supra reintroduced the Sunsport name in V-drive configurations such as the Sunsport 21V, 22V, and 24V, which evolved into modern wake and surf boats. The original direct-drive Sunsport, however, remains a beloved model among enthusiasts for its classic feel and versatility. Many owners still use these boats today for both skiing and wakeboarding thanks to their durable construction and predictable wake characteristics.
