Designed for families and riders who want high-end performance in a 20-foot package, the X2 continues to stand out as one of MasterCraft’s most enduring models.
The MasterCraft X2 has one of the most interesting histories in the company’s lineup, evolving through multiple generations while retaining its reputation for agility and versatility.
First Generation (2002–2006)
The original X2 was built on the legendary ProStar 205V hull, the same design that powered the first X-Star and helped launch modern wakeboarding. Measuring 20 feet in length, this early X2 delivered a balanced, ramp-style wake that became the standard for the sport during the early 2000s. Its compact footprint and V-drive configuration made it easy to tow, store, and handle, while still producing professional-quality wakes when weighted.
The first-generation X2 was powered by Indmar inboard V8 engines producing between 310 and 330 horsepower. Its hull design provided a clean wake with smooth transitions, making it ideal for both wakeboarding and crossover use. This hull is still celebrated by wake enthusiasts for its classic shape and consistent performance.
In 2007, when MasterCraft introduced a larger new X2 design, the original 205V hull continued production under a new name — the MasterCraft X1 — preserving the legacy of the first X2 for another generation.
Second Generation (2007–2012)
The second-generation X2, introduced for 2007, was built on an entirely new 20-foot hull designed for versatility across wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and recreational skiing. It measured 20 feet in length with a beam of 100 inches, making it one of the most spacious 20-foot boats on the market at the time. The hull design featured deeper freeboard for improved comfort and larger ballast capacity while maintaining agile handling and an efficient running surface.
The 2007–2012 X2 came equipped with factory ballast tanks and MasterCraft’s early surf and wake systems, allowing riders to fine-tune wake shape and size. Its wake was clean and rampy, suitable for all skill levels, while its surf wave offered strong push when weighted properly.
Power options included Indmar or Ilmor inboard engines ranging from 310 to 350 horsepower, providing smooth and consistent performance across all disciplines. Inside, the X2 featured a premium layout with wraparound seating, a large open bow, and ample storage for boards, ropes, and ballast. It comfortably seated up to 11 passengers and included MasterCraft’s signature quality materials and finish throughout.
Third Generation (2013–2016)
The third-generation X2, introduced for 2013, further refined the 20-foot class wake boat concept. This version featured a deeper hull, improved surf technology, and an updated interior layout for increased comfort and functionality. Equipped with the Gen 2 Surf System, the X2 produced clean, adjustable surf waves on both sides and retained excellent wakeboarding performance.
At 20 feet in length with a 100-inch beam, the modern X2 was easy to trailer and store but offered a surprisingly roomy interior with seating for up to 11 people. Power came from Ilmor inboard engines such as the 5.7L and 6.0L MPI options, rated between 320 and 373 horsepower.
The third-generation X2 was praised for its balance of surf capability, nimble handling, and all-around usability. It remained in production until 2016, when it was replaced by the XT20 in MasterCraft’s new crossover series.
